🖊️ Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest

Grades 6–8
2026 Theme:

 "What a Veteran Taught me about America"


Each year, nearly 68,800 students in grades 6–8 enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen youth essay contest to share their views on patriotism and American values. The contest inspires students to explore our nation’s history and reflect on their role in today’s society.


đź’µ Scholarships & Awards

  • 🥇 National First Place: $5,000

  • 🏅 All State Winners: Minimum of $500 at the national level

  • đź’° Over $1.4 million in total state and national awards distributed annually


📜 Essay Guidelines

  • Topic:  "What a Veteran Taught me about America"

  • Length: 300–400 words

  • Format: Typed essay expressing your views based on the annual patriotic theme

  • Open to: All U.S. students in grades 6–8


📥 How to Submit

  1. Write your essay following the theme and word count guidelines

  2. Complete the official entry form from QR code and submit.
